It’s that time of year, Filler Seed prep time! It’s that time of year, Filler Seed prep time! What is it? Filler Seed is any variety of seed (based on personal preference for brand) that we use for; border/headlands of our yield trials. We individually select varieties of filler seed depending on the location of the field & their CHU’s (Crop Heat Units) Refer to; ‘Agronomy Guide For Field Crops Publication 811’ on the OMAFRA Website for definition. (Page 255) In the Yield Trials, we have separate blocks for specific types of beans, Ie; Conventional & Traited. Due to certain tasks that Traited beans require such as; spraying for weeds. They need to be separated by ‘Filler’ to create a border between the blocks making it easier to spray plots that require it. (Swipe to picture 2 for reference) Filler seed is also used on the perimeter of the plots to limit damage of yield trials cause by; weather & wildlife, as well as if the Cooperator plants his/her own crops around our plot, this ensures that the plots are secured inside their personal barrier.
